Daylight Saving: Stop Legislating the Sun

Dispatches from the Heartland

Twice a year, Americans perform a strange ritual: we change the clocks and pretend we’ve changed time itself. With Congress once again debating whether to make Daylight Saving Time permanent, the national conversation has narrowed to two choices—lock the clock forward or lock it back. In this week’s Dispatch from the Heartland, I take up the forgotten third option, the one almost no one is talking about: ending Daylight Saving Time altogether and returning to the natural rhythm of Standard Time. Sometimes the simplest answer is the one hiding in plain sight.

Stop Legislating the Sun

Every spring and autumn, Americans participate in a strange national ritual. We walk to our walls, dashboards, microwaves, and bedside tables and manually alter time itself. We twist the clock forward, then back again, as though the sun itself were waiting for our permission to rise. This bi-annual disruption has become increasingly out of step with common sense, yet the debate in Washington continues to circle the same narrow question: Should we lock the clock permanently to Daylight Saving Time? In this Dispatch from the Heartland I would like to offer a clearer answer — one that rarely appears in the headlines. We should abandon Daylight Saving Time entirely and commit, once and for all, to permanent Standard Time.

The Illusion of “Saving” Time

The central flaw in Daylight Saving Time is its premise. You cannot save daylight. You cannot manufacture sunshine. You cannot legislate the tilt of the earth, even if some high-mind people in government think they can. Changing the numbers on a clock does not stretch the day. Nature already manages daylight with exquisite precision. As the earth leans toward the sun, summer days lengthen on their own, extending natural daylight by up to two hours. In July, dawn arrives early and dusk lingers late, offering farmers, families, and evening strollers all the light they could want. Even retailers, prime proponents of longer sunny days take benefit without further exaggeration for the sake of sales. No congressional bill is needed to enjoy a summer evening. The season cures its own term of darkness. Daylight Saving Time, by contrast, is a human attempt to outsmart nature — and nature always wins.

Listening to the Body, Not the Clock

Permanent Standard Time aligns our daily lives with the natural world. It is not an arbitrary invention; it reflects the actual position of the sun over our meridian. Noon means something. Morning light means something. Our bodies know this instinctively, Biological Harmony: Human circadian rhythms reset each day with morning light. When we wake in darkness, our internal clocks drift, disrupting sleep, mood, and metabolic health. Health and Safety: Permanent Daylight Saving Time would plunge winter mornings into pitch-blackness. Children would wait for school buses in the dark. Commuters would navigate unlit roads. Sleep scientists warn that this shift increases accidents, depression, and cardiovascular stress. Sleep Integrity: Neurologists overwhelmingly support permanent Standard Time because morning light is essential for healthy sleep cycles. Evening light, by contrast, delays sleep and disrupts hormonal balance. In short, Standard Time works with the body. Daylight Saving Time works against it.

Restoring the Natural Rhythm

Supporters of permanent Daylight Saving Time often cite commercial benefits — more evening shopping, more restaurant traffic, more recreational activity. But the Heartland does not live by the mall. It lives by the land, the seasons, and the steady rhythm of community life. Agriculture, outdoor labor, and the simple cadence of daily living function best when noon actually marks the sun’s highest point. When morning light arrives naturally. When time reflects the world as it is, not as we wish to manipulate it. By locking the clock to permanent Standard Time, we stop imposing a twice-yearly jet lag on the entire nation. We stop tampering with the gears. We accept the seasons as they come, allowing the natural progression of the year to dictate our daylight. It is time to retire the illusion of extended time. Time to stop legislating the dictates of the sun. Time to stop interfering with nature and let nature keep the time.
