With technological devices providing so much escape today, along with the inherent “Big Brother” thumb print, there’s reason to consider what we might miss of the little remaining reality we can touch…that simplicity that used to enhance our lives.
Simple Times
by Odin Roark
Where went the death by bone-club
Rock
Spear
Arrow
Winchester
Knife
45
38
22
M-1
Nuclear bomb?
So far in the past
When Betty Davis could tear anyone a new one
While John Wayne had to only saunter up
And Telly Savalis’ Kojak only had to utter
“Who Loves You Baby”
How about Peter Gun?
Cool
Slick
Make-believe killing
Readying our easy night’s sleep
Flash forward
Gone-amuck reality
Out of the shadows
Into our faces
Like it or not
None of us will most likely die
By the old-fashioned glamorous
Sergio Leone method of
“Once Upon A Time In America”
We’re destined to go by way
Of digits
Numbers
Algorithms
Cyber shoot’em ups
Power grids down
Damns flooding
Wall Street blackouts
Maybe even with “1984”
The new sacred book
Such science fiction made real
Will be staged
Between PC boots on the ground
Mac eyes in the skies
And Keith Alexander’s empire at the helm
Controlling the tangible
Spiritual
And non-human
Infrastructure
From a safe haven
Satellite in the sky
Or his own space station
Arguably
The good old days
Are being replaced by
This new century’s good old days to be
Somewhere in the not too distant future
Waits a history void of yesterdays ethics and principals
Might there be a way to start over
By way of an alien civilization with common sense?
