I am Virginia Beach, VA Artist and Author Dragon Randy Holder, as the author of “Ink In The Hood” Tattoos for darker skin my goal was to present visually my work during a four year in-depth art study about dark skin tattooing. Just like the art study the book evolved into much more.
My experiences with writing were mostly limited to technical reverences and business and or legal writing. I have always had a passion for Poetry and have written many sonnets, but never would I seek to publish them as mostly romantic in nature and I have always been a very private person. Even though I have written on many subjects in the above categories, I knew I was in over my head when it came to having the full technical knowledge to write a book.
I spent 100’s of hours researching and reading about writing, the publish asked me for a Table of Contents for the book, that was the beginning of the book, I wrote the TOC in September 2007 and the final draft on the manuscript was submitted in December 2008.
I wrote the first manuscript and trashed it with three months to deadline. After that huge events followed cause one delay to the next, are lives became in danger I was forced to find a place to move my family and was entrenched in major family crisis’s.
I was up really up against: I had accomplished moving both myself and my mother from another state after three house deals two of which had huge amounts of cash deposits fell through, it seemed as though everything that could go wrong had.
Now left with less than 29 days to deadline and I needed to hold a Photography event as well for all the feature participants in the book. I decided I need some help and went looking for a computer program on the net to direct my efforts after a week I chose a program and found a Photographer. I was stressed but hopeful, I sat down to write the book after installing the program, I spent 18 hour days building the book treatment using the dramatic creative writing system, this provided me with story development of all the individual stories and character profiles. Really important was it provided with an in-depth look at understanding how the material could go together to form bases for writing a story.
I completed a 30 day writing program in 15 days.
Ok, less than 15 days left to write the manuscript….LOL. Chapter by Chapter I wrote the book based on my Original table of Contents with two guiding outline concepts; one from mom and one from my wife, my wife said tell them about my experiences along the way, my mom said tell it in a way that would interest all readers, young or old in such a way that they can experiences the events for themselves.
Day 14 still have the last chapter to write and no feature pictures.
Day 15, Finally day, I have no pictures, I have to chase down the Photographer to get the pictures and I cannot use 95% of them 800 hundred BAD Pictures…….I write the Editor pleading for an extension, he explains it simply the manuscript has to enter into the system now to be published in 2009 and Igot a week to provide the pictures but only the weekend to provide the completed manuscript and I have to include sub-tiles for 380 pictures, because it expanded our readers.
Let’s see do I have this right now? I have one WEEK! I have to call back all the Features and shoot and edit the pictures myself, and finish the last chapter in the book and one more thing provide 380 descriptive sub-titles, I don’t even have a digital camera for the job.
Does anybody have a gun, maybe strong sedative?
Well there you have it what was the guiding forces behind my first published book “Ink In The Hood”
Though it was totally insane I believe I wrote a great first Book, read it you will like all the stories, I defiantly have a interesting life to say the least and it didn’t end there….
