Writer of novels, comic books, and other fun and scary things!

Background Information

I'm primarily a horror writer, although I have also written tie-in fiction set in non-horror universes. My original works (RIVER RUNS RED, MISSING WHITE GIRL, the WITCH SEASON quartet, THE SLAB) and original comic books (DESPERADOES, GRAVESLINGER, etc.) are almost all horror. I'm a full-time freelance writer, but have also been a bookseller (I'm one of the owners of Mysterious Galaxy bookstore in San Diego), a VP of Marketing, a Senior Editor for DC Comics/WildStorm and the Editor-in-Chief of IDW Publishing.

I am the only author to have swept the "Best Original Novel" categories at the Scribe Awards (presented by the International Association of Media Tie-in Writers) for general fiction (Las Vegas: High Stakes Game) and speculative fiction (30 Days of Night: Rumors of the Undead).
True West Magazine picked my comic book series Desperadoes: Buffalo Dreams as the Best Western Comic Book of 2007.

Additional Information

Supernatural thriller RIVER RUNS RED goes on sale 9/30/08! This is the second in a loose, thematically-linked trilogy set in the US/Mexico border region, following MISSING WHITE GIRL. The critics are raving about my supernatural thriller MISSING WHITE GIRL! The Douglas, AZ Daily Dispatch said Missing White Girl "offers a gripping supernatural thriller while weaving an insightful commentary about race and class on the U.S./Mexico border." The Tucson Weekly said "Missing White Girl is frequently enthralling. Mariotte hits upon some fascinating topics, including those of immigration and the Border Patrol, Mexican and American patriotism, and the terrible things people will do when they feel maligned and desperate. He throws in just enough grit and gore to appease action junkies, but doesn't use it as an easy selling point to the Saw crowd. "But his true masterpiece is Buck Shelton. In his hero, he's crafted one of the finest new sleuths in fiction."
