Inquiring minds want to know?

Who Invented Toilet Paper?
Toilet Paper, sometimes called toilet tissue in Britain, is a tissue paper product people primarily use to clean the anus and surrounding area of fecal material after defecation and to clean the perennial area of urine after urination and other bodily fluid releases. It also acts as a layer of protection for the hands during these processes.

So who invented it?
As with most things the first documented use of toilet paper dates back to the 6th century AD, in early medieval China.
An Arab traveler to China in the year 851 AD remarked:
“They [the Chinese] do not wash with water when they have done their necessities; they only wipe themselves with paper.”
I suppose that is one of the secrets they wanted to keep behind The Wall?

The UnChinese world did not look favorably at the practice.
A 16th-century French satirical writer François Rabelais, in his novel Gargantua and Pantagruel, has his character Gargantua investigate a great number of ways of cleansing oneself after defecating. Gargantua dismisses the use of paper as ineffective, rhyming that: "Who his foul tail with paper wipes, Shall at his buttocks leave some chips."
He concludes that "the neck of a goose, that is well downed" provides an optimum cleansing medium.
I should think the life of a goose was not well coveted in those days.

Joseph Gayetty is widely credited with being the inventor of modern commercially available toilet paper in the United States.

A German quip says that the toilet paper of Nazi Germany was so rough and scratchy that it was almost unusable, so many people used old issues of the Völkischer Beobachter,(The official Nazi newspaper,) instead, because the paper was softer.

Moist toilet paper, called wet wipes, was first introduced in the United Kingdom in the 1990s. It has been promoted as being a better method of cleaning than dry toilet paper and was promoted as a flushable product but it has been implicated in the creation of “Fatbergs,” that clog waterpipes.

Who invented the toilet paper roll?
It has been noted that early toilet paper, which came in a very long sheet, was quite difficult to use without becoming wrapped up in the product, especially by unskilled and clumsy users, until the advent of the popular cardboard roll.

I did a search to find the inventor and found there is actually a
Toilet Paper Encyclopedia, that lists all toilet paper events with dates, times, and other factors.

I am too fatigued to dissect it now, but may print it out and read it at a time more relevant to the subject matter.
Know what I mean?

I wonder what the goose thought after the event, running around the farmyard with a dirty neck!

Why is it that bidets are only available in rich homes? Aren't they everywhere in France?

My earliest recollection, probably a result of the Great Depression, that Sears, Spiegel's and JCPenney's catalogs were the primary medium of ass wipe in outhouses in my neck of the woods.

Bye, George,

Ron
