All you can give.

I have a dear friend who lives in Florida. I've only known her for about four years and now I live in Vermont. But thanks to email and phones, our friendship has transcended the distance between us. We jokingly refer to our relationship as a mutual support group. She vents to me and I vent to her. But her last email left me depressed. Her oldest son is going to Afghanistan (sp?)March 10th. She's frightened, suffering a severe bout of anxiety. I tried to soothe her with kind words. But I can't truly experience her pain, as I can't the parents, spouses, children, friends of all those people sent before him. I've lost a child who died of a heart attack. Died in my arms. And I thought that was tragic. And yet the idea of losing a child to a war thousands of miles away has to be the most awful thing that could happen. At least John was with me. That's more than any parent could ask for.

Right now I'm asking for prayers. Not only for my friend's son, but for the thousands of men/women serving overseas. They need to know we are with them. And we can only deliver our emotions through prayer. So, no matter what nationality, religion or whatever you are, we all acknowledge one God. Please pray for our children.

Dear Dana, how kind of you to ask for prayers for your friend and all the other parents. We should always pray for another. And keep an attitude of prayer at all times. We need each other. My prayers are with you. Thanks.

My prayers and thoughts are with our soldiers day and night. I worry about them and my gut goes into knots every time I hear a death toll on our soldiers casually reported as if it's no big deal. (That makes me SO angry) My prayers go out to your friend, her family, and her son that he returns home safe and uninjured. It's too bad we haven't evolved beyond war to settle our differences. But then I'm an idealist I guess.

I'm also sad to hear about what happened to your son. No parent should have to go through that. I can't even imagine how I would feel if someone I knew, or my own child died in a war overseas. My heart goes out to every family that has lost someone over there. At least we can find some comfort in knowing they are all with God now.

I only know this. When you talk to your friend, you must convince her that fear generates more fear and that those negative vibes do not help.
Give her strength, by telling her to have her anxiety for a short time, but then let it go. We are prone to think catastrophic settings especially with our children. Know that I have been in her shoes and at times still am--but that which I can't control only poses more stress. We must let go and think he will come through the best he is able. I send her all my good thoughts. My best to you dear friend, Dana. yours, Venera
