What is Social Progress?

The only time I visited the Kapila river, I was impressed by its cool serene placid relation to me; it was so calm, it was still-- I do not know why it did not /does not flow. Or is it that the river stopped its flow. I felt happy and homely. My junior, an Assistant Prof. at the UIC, is from a city that is the spiritual centre typical of India ---- populous, gorgeous, old, dirty, populated, and perhaps corrupt. I found the Kapila river totally opposite, it is befiting my size. I would have been happy to die on the river that Makar Sankranthi day. Pehaps the river accepted me as Hindu, and I was happy. I even fantasized the Kapila flowing to my room, taking my dead-body, along with the books and the notes and the garbage I collected over the years. The Hurculean approach to the 'cleaning' would have definitely taken way my worries to pay for the rent in Bangalore; as I had to loose everything  in Chicago. What is social progress then? (If you find my personal kachkachi as unpalatable as revisionism, you have your own journal anyway. Let telu-felu-delu-kalu read your journal.  I just wanted to write for myself at my own cost).
