X is an unknown
Christ is an unknown

Xian – an interesting word, an interesting concept.
Xian!

After experiencing, and later examining the Holiday squabble of 2005, one can only come to the conclusion that the “Silent Majority” has awakened and is objecting to the loss of Christ in most of America.
It was only a few generations ago that it was called “Christian America” for the simple reason the country was founded on Christian principles. As Christianity became diluted, the idea of Christian America faded. The most obvious evidence is the word “Xmas” in place of Christmas. The “X” came from the Greek language and was the initial – in Greek – of Christ. In English, the “X” denotes an unknown quantity. Since most Americans do not speak Greek, the X reverts to the English ‘unknown quantity’.
Because Christ has also become unknown, the X is appropriate.
Christmas becomes Xmas.
Christianity becomes Xianity.
Christians become Xians.
X stands for the unknown.
Objection ! The churches teach Christ.
They teach their particular versions of Christ and there are an awful lot of different versions. All are supposedly based on the Bible . . . and sometimes the Q’ran, Book of Mormon, and others.
If all versions of Christ are based on the same source(s), then those who interpret that source have lost the meaning of that source and have made it overly complicated after the manner of their own ideas.
All this means that Christ is an unknown, therefore an “X”.
This may be an oversimplification of a deep subject, but the seed of reality is here.
Back to 2005 - - -
The ratio of sales between “Happy Holiday” cards and “Merry Christmas” has changed. The after Christmas sales of Christmas cards seem to have sold out far before the Happy Holiday cards. The demand is greater than expected
For non-Christians the Happy Holiday cards are appropriate and should be so used.
Just something to think about.

What I noticed is the people screaming about the 'X' are usually people who don't behave in what I consider a very Christ-like manner to begin with, so their complaints seem especially petty. For example, the woman who came to my daughter's ornament shop and asked her to paint nine long names and Christmas 2005 of a tiny ornament instead of buying a larger ornament, or nine ornaments for all her grandchildren. When my daughter apologized and said it wouldn't be possible to fit all the woman wanted in the space availabe, unless she wrote xmas '05, the lady went berserk and was very rude. In my opinion, my non-Christian daughter showed much more of the 'spirit' than the screaming customer. This is only one example. I saw another woman refuse to ever again communicate with a non-christian man who wrote xmas in an email loop, claiming it offended her so badly she couldn't speak to him again. I've known this man for years (as has she) and he has never purposely done anything hurtful to anyone. The fact that she didn't know his religious beliefs and expected him to not only know hers but adopt hers shows which of them is the more 'giving' person. X IS an acceptable abbreviation for Christ, and even if it weren't, only those who are hung up on christian formalities should be expected to write it their way. I wonder if the 'after Christmas sales of cards might reflect who beat the pavement all through the holidays (before and after) for sales instead of spending time with family and friends, and not really so much who cares about the cards.
