Bush Calls for Gay Marriage Ban

Bush Calls for Gay Marriage Ban

Mr Bush criticised rulings on the issue by "activist courts"
US President George W Bush has called for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriages.

Mr Bush used his weekly radio address to deliver a plea for the US Senate to formally define marriage as the union of man and woman.

He said the measure was needed because "activist courts" left no alternative.

An amendment stands little chance of being passed but analysts say Republicans see the issue as a vote winner in November's mid-term polls.

They say the president is seeking to switch the spotlight onto positive issues for his party in the wake of his slumping popularity - particularly over Iraq.

Opinion polls

Mr Bush said: "Ages of experience have taught us that the commitment of a husband and a wife to love and to serve one another promotes the welfare of children and the stability of society."

A constitutional amendment will put a decision that is critical to American families and American society in the hands of the American people

George W Bush

Judges have recently rejected laws on traditional marriages in states such as Washington, California and New York.

"An amendment to the constitution is necessary because activist courts have left our nation with no other choice," Mr Bush said.

However, an amendment would require two-thirds support in the House and Senate. A similar measure was defeated in 2004.

Republicans are hoping their stance on an issue that opinion polls suggest is shared by the public will boost votes in November, when they fear losing control of Congress.

A recent Gallup poll suggested 59% of Americans were opposed to validating gay marriage in law.

The Democrats accuse their rivals of applying a smokescreen.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said: "Bush Republicans would rather focus on purely divisive manoeuvres than real solutions that address the growing energy crisis."

...'just as in the days of Noah'...if the amendment does NOT pass, there will be no doubt as to where the earth's collective inhabitants are situated...and while that would be damnable, we can still rejoice, for our Salvation is ever nearer!!! look up, look up, LOOK UP!

Just have to wonder if that will be of any consequense to already married couples and those who have their weddings planned... If it is right? Who knows, only people who are affected can probably answer that.

Peter, I am 100% with Bush. I’m a Bush girl all the way.. Always has been conservative…. It frightens me to think that in some American schools they are fighting it out in court over the teachers trying to teach the children about two mommies or two daddies. San Francisco is the highest per capata rare of gays probably in the world. They are very anti Bush, family, you name it. I had a ex roommate that was struggling not to be gay, by going to all kinds of religious counseling and she stalked me telling me she lusted for me. I had to move out. It disgusted me. And I see it here in Tennessee, but not as much. What do I think? I think children world wide should not have to be in that terrible trap. I KNOW HOMOSEXUALITY IS A SPIRIT, PETER. They say they were born that way, that it may be a culture thing or they were molested and just became that way.. HOG WASH!!!!!!!!!!! There is only the spirit that fills people with sexual lust. I know it’s wrong because if we all were than there would not be people populating the earth. I am very pro life, pro family, pro Bush, period. And I have seen converted homosexuals that once were gay turned straight through the blood of Christ and yes counseling. It is a very demonic spirit, Peter. Thanks for spot lighting it. Our five year olds do not need to know why there are two mommies and two daddies am very heated about this issue.. Children are the world, precious ones are our life..

I would think the percentage against gay marriage would be higher than 59%.
