Inmates Die at Guantanamo

The number of hunger strikers has risen sharply | Three detainees at the US base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have died in what appears to have been a joint suicide pact, officials said. It was not immediately clear when the inmates - two Saudis and a Yemeni - died, the US military said. They "were found unresponsive and not breathing in their cells by guards". The US holds about 460 men at the facility on suspicion of links to Osama Bin Laden's al-Qaeda organisation and the Taleban ex-leaders of Afghanistan. They are the first deaths reported at the detention centre. President George W Bush has been notified of the incident and the Pentagon is expected to issue a statement about the deaths. Some detainees have been involved in an on-off hunger strike since last August to protest at their continued detention and conditions, although according to authorities the number dropped to 18 last weekend from a high of 131. On Friday, Mr Bush responded to growing calls for the prison to be shut down, by saying: "We would like to end the Guantanamo - we'd like it to be empty." "There are some that, if put out on the streets, would create grave harm to American citizens and other citizens of the world. And, therefore, I believe they ought to be tried in courts here in the United States," he added.

It seems as if suicide might be the result of too much guilt to handle, of course who would really know?

Peter, thanks for posting this. I was just listening to Radio Talkshow Host, Michael Medved - he said that there are actually less wartime atrocities re Iraq/Afghanistan than any time in history; that President Bush's Administration has been zealous about following the International laws! No one likes to hear of death - even the enemy's, in particular circumstances. But these evidently CHOSE to kill themselves...they took on a spirit of martrydom, and murdered themselves! That is not to be pitied! God Almighty is the author anf finisher, the giver and taker of Life...and HE CHOOSES HIS OW MARTYRS, TOO! Thanks for keeping us up-to-date...BE SAFE OUT THERE!
Always covering you in prayer ~ love, rhonda |

Wow, Peter. I heard a little about this place but not the deaths. Suicide has many facetts and reasons why people take their lives. I suppose they were not strong enough to deal with it and felt no hope or maybe their religion told them to.I alwas say, what a waste... Yes they need to close it. I do not know alot about prisons but all I can hear people say they are hell's kitchen.I remember when the holicaust was going on in Hitlers rein, there was a girl who wrote about it, her name was Ann Frank. And her attitude was that you can be bound just like Paul the Apposal in chains and yet STILL , yes still the joy of the Lord is your strength. I firmly beleve that has what gave life to many POW's in war world 1 and 2. Yes, Bush is right, it needs to shut down. We can pray and love them all through it, no mater what they have done...
Peace & Love,
me |
