Is it better to be "weatlhy" or "healthy"?

In the wake of the untimely death of soulful R&B singer, Gerald Levert, the issue of good nutrition and healthcare must once again come to the forefront of discussion in the African-American community.

Yes, it's a tragedy that the life of such a naturally gifted and talented individual ended so abruptly.  Gerald Levert was only 40 years old.  He contributed greatly to the music world and he did it without stealing other people's music or cursing every other word.  But we cannot overlook the fact that he was overweight and that may, very well, have played a factor in his death.  In an age where information is accessible from everywhere, should he have known more about medical conditions that can result from carrying too many extra pounds?  Excess fat, lack of exercise and unhealthy eating habits can all lead to cardiovascular disease.  This should be a wake up call to African-Americans everywhere who may fit the profile of being considered "obese."

What can individuals do to decrease their risk of developing cardiovascular disease?

The most effective steps all people can take to prevent CVD and stroke are as follows:

 Control your weight

 Control high blood pressure

 Stop smoking

Eat a healthy diet, including five or more servings of fruits and vegetables a day

Exercise regularly, such as brisk walking at least 30 minutes on five or more days of the week

 Reduce stress

 Control cholesterol

I'd rather be healthy and wise...than to be wealthy and in need of serious medical attention.  What about you?

The message that this article attempts to convey has previously been effectively promoted through the mass media and through the private philanthropically-supported efforts of community-based agencies/organizations. Its timing, on the other hand, should give us reason to pause and reconsider whether Gerald Levert's untimely demise is an appropriate vehicle for continuing to get the word out--at this time.

Even as we are writing and reading, Mr. Levert's family is coming to terms with the shock of his sudden and unforeseen departure and making preparations for his services. Sensitivity and consideration of them must reign supreme and help us to realize that a more appropriate time for this issue to be ferried into the public debate lies somewhere in the future. The fact that his wealth and fame were woven into the fabric of this article in which the focus might have remained on health and lifestyle issues begs the question, what is this really about?

I've witnessed the passing of more celebrities than I can recall--some of whom prided themselves on extremely healthy lifestyles. It has left me with the impression that when God says it's time, He pays no respect to person, privilege, or position (or lifestyle).

As a fan of popular music, I embrace the notion that Gerald Levert's death creates a void in the field and that his legacy will be reflected upon for generations to come. And while I agree with the basic premise of what you shared, I struggle with its timing and other issues that have been drawn into your argument.
