A new and innovative way to help peek the interest of children in education.

An uplifting article from one of the local newspapers, January 19 2007.

"The third grade at Ruby Young Elementary in DeSoto is plagued with injuries, according to campus reporters."
"The fourth-grade "Picture Us!" journalism class is keeping close tabs on the happenings around campus through the school's enrichment program, University of Enrichment.
At the beginning of the year, fourth-grade students registered in courses of interest taught by five "professors." The students enrolled in the classes of their choice, just like they would if they were going to college."
Wow! I was very impressed as I continued to read through this article. What an ingenious way to help children develop reading, writing, focus and an analytical insight to mention a few of the positives.
The excitement and enthusiasm these children are investing will become an adventure well exercised. I offer high regards to those involved in putting this into place. The article goes on.....
"One nine week unit focuses on TAKS testing. The other three units during the year allow students to gain skills as journalists, scientists, muscians and investigators."

"This past summer, I challenged teachers to provide an hour of enrichment each day to students in fourth grade," DeSoto school district Superintendent Alton Frailey said. "The Ruby Young fourth-grade team teachers, thinking outside the box, focused on the individual teaching strengths and interests to develop the University of Enrichment."
"What we learned is if these students had just been in class, they wouldn't have explored a new side of themselves," fourth-grade teacher Sue Abar said."
"For example, Mr. Frailey said by interviewing, taking photos and writing their own stories, many students have developed a new writing skill not gained in traditional English classes while learning the business of producing a campus newspaper."
What these children are learning in conjunction with the traditional class room curriculum will be most invaluable to them as they grow older.
What a woderful incentive for these children. I can only hope that other schools around the country will listen up and afford their students similar programs.
If you or someone you know is involved in the education of elementary children you might want to consider passing this on.
                      Thanks for reading this.
