If I could convince my students of worthy pastimes, one would be reading...my pleasure and obsession
Why do I read? Why does anyone? We read every day--to learn things...to pass classes...to set up our computers or access cell phones, to learn game cheats. We read newspapers and blogs and medical websites.
I read to find out how it feels to live another life in another time period. I want to be a dragonrider or a Spanish princess, or the mistress of a British lord, if only in imagination. I want to walk the road to Emmaus, capture a pirate ship, survive an arctic winter. All these are reasons for reading narrative writing.
