Mary E. Martin's A Trial of One is the third and final installment in her Osgood Trilogy. Attorney Harry Jenkins is on a frantic search for shares of Elixicorp Enterprises worth over thirty million dollars. Quite a tidy sum.
To follow the shares' trail, Harry must outwit Dr. Robert Hawke, a madman who claims to have a cure for Alzheimer's disease. Hawke assures Harry that he was promised the money to complete his research. The person who supposedly knows the money's whereabouts is a befuddled elderly woman confined to a nursing home.
Harry starts on his quest in Toronto, continues to London, and then heads to the waterways of Venice, in search of someone with the appellation of Q. The fun of this book is the opportunity to vicariously live in the three aforementioned cities. Vividly described, the places could easily be characters, while the characters themselves play the parts for which they were created, and play them well.
At times, the action slows down, but then picks up again to continue the flow. A Trial of One is an interesting odyssey, with a love story thrown in to complete the picture. |
