Have you ever been in extreme pain with no relief in sight? Have you ever been dizzy and off balance? Did not know which way to turn? You were not getting the answers you deserve? If you have answered yes or no to any of these questions, read on.

CONCUSSION:

This is a story about a dear friend who fell, hit her head and had a concussion. The symptoms were headache, dizziness and loss of balance. After she was discharged from the hospital she was taken to a nursing home to recover, and then eventually she would be released back to her home, and into society. This is the way it usually goes but in her case, disaster.

Her headaches were increasing in severity. The strong pain medication she was taking was not working. The dizziness persisted and the loss of balance was so severe she could not walk one step unaccompanied by a nurse. She passed out a total of 3 times.

The neurologist thought a piece of calcium had broken off in her inner ear. This piece of calcium was either floating free or slightly attached. This was causing her balance problems. She needed vestibular exercises to correct this problem.

VESTIBULAR PROBLEM:

When you have .vertigo (dizziness) or loss of balance.

In the nursing home the Doctor in charge of the facility, the Physical Therapy staff and the Occupational Staff were not trained for this type of problem. Fortunately, she had a personal friend who used to work in a vestibular clinic. He brought her some vestibular exercises and together they put together her vestibular therapy. When she finally consulted with her Ears, Nose and Throat Doctor, the doctor approved of her exercises and added a few more.

Did you ever hear of a patient, who was not a medical doctor, put together his or her own physical therapy routine? I ask you, what do you think of this?

But the headaches were getting worse and she still could not walk unassisted. The neurologist she had seen when she was in the hospital washed his hands of her and said, "I can't help you anymore. This headache is due to a post traumatic concussion. He had never visited her in the nursing home and his diagnosis was placed only on the testing which was done when her head injury first occurred.

2nd OPINION:

The nursing home was in the process of discharging her from their facility in 2 days. She was smart enough to ask for a 2nd opinion. She had a wonderful Neurological doctor review her tests and gave her a neurological examination. The doctor ordered more tests. She changed her medication, and also thought of several other possible reasons for her to be dizzy and unstable on her feet. She was not discharged from the nursing home and now has a better chance of a full recovery.

Never be afraid to ask for a 2nd opinion. It may save your life or make you able to live your life independently.
