You can have the most interesting and colorful book for your child to read but if your child is not interested in reading what good is the book?

How did your child get into this situation?

It starts from infancy. As a tiny baby, the baby loves to be in your arms and rocked, cuddled and read to in a soft voice. It does not matter what you read. Your child will only feel the closeness and the sound of your voice.

When your child is 4 or 5 years old then you can start introducing picture books with dialogue. Now you can become creative and really ham up the voices. Make them interesting and funny. Your child will once again love this special one on one time with you.

When your child reaches kindergarten books really become important in their everyday school lives. If they have been introduced to them when they are infants through toddler to young children, you know they will have a better handle on starting to read.

In first grade the child must start mastering sounding out the letters and putting them together to read a sentence. Some children catch on one, two, three while others struggle. If reading is not mastered in their reading years what kind of life will they have when they grow up?

A suggestion for the teachers is to select a book the children love. Then assign the children different speaking roles. Let them ham them up and act out their characters. When the book is finished being read include the rest of the class in a lively discussion on what the book was about? Who was the main character? Did you like the story or how could it have ended differently?

I can assure you, your children will be clamoring for the next book to be read in the same fashion the next day.

Electronics are nice to have and a great way to learn different things but it should not replace reading. Electronics are more exciting and colorful than reading a book, but reading a book is a must.

As your child becomes a toddler a world can open. Picture books are what is needed to entice their imaginations. They will love that special alone time with you when they can cuddle on your lap. You can read the pictures together. When you child starts bringing you a favorite book to read, you know you have sparked some reading interest.
