Some background to The Surkling Trilogy

Legend from The Land of Muggy

This is short article about the past before the time of the Surkling. The various things mentioned in it are very much a part of the background of The Surkling Trilogy. I have chosen it for the sprinkling of invented words and names that may engage the reader further. The article has been extracted from The History of the Land of Muggy.

The city of Bekand, that first brilliant hope of Wilderfolk civilization; symbolized by the boy and the golden column that held the strange light, shines forth from the Myth and Legend into the Ages of the Wilderfolk. Bekand is swollen by the stories of the Forging of the Southern War Crown, Quilatroy and the First Surkling. But its History is in fact, half submerged by a sea of legend that is itself, pitted against the evil kings of the Dark Westing. So, the destruction of Bekand appears inevitable against such ruthless forces. But when Bekand fell, the image of the Boy and the Golden Column that held the strange light, did not fall! It grew to symbolize a past Age of achievement culminating in the greatness of Bekand! The Age that followed was desperate for the Wilderfolk, but in the hands of a few a new world began to emerge. And a new Age of Reason was promised. And by generations of telling, these tales filtered eastward, away from the Dark Westing and into the heartlands of the Southing. And here they seeded, and became the Pantheon that the Southing civilization was born from. And its inhabitants, the Silderilk were thus connected to the Greatness that was Bekand! And in the way of it, a new great city would arise and be the natural heir to all that was Bekand. This dream was grand and broad and included the Legenda of the Gods; a majestic past with which the foundations of this new Age would be built upon.
