There is a growing trend today to put everything into God's lap as a way of
rationalization but when it covers a greater area of responsibility, such vague "excuse" merits further investigation.

The Convenient Way Out

by Cynthia Buhain-Baello
September 12, 2008

The other day I was tuned in to a televised interview of a political candidate, and her comment that the US soldiers fighting the war in Iraq as "doing God's will" made me really feel uneasy inside.

As a Christian, I find such remarks as very "encompassing" and totally lacking in factual proof, that is, basing it on Scriptural foundation.
In the Bible, God never acted in wars or conflicts like the gods of mythology
and almost always, He had a purpose for
the wars, as in Exodus, Joshua, and
David.

To put God in the midst of a conflict that has nothing at all to do with Him, is trivializing the power of
God and smacks of irresponsibility in
leadership for a failed foreign policy.
If this reasoning had an iota of truth in it, then what do we say to the Jihadists who kill themselves for Allah? Is God at war with Himself then?

We should not engage in wars then credit God for the results when our lack of careful planning and defined goals leave us stranded for final solutions later on. This is being simplistic and naive, an easy excuse and a convenient way out.

True leadership does a thorough study of decisions, gathers the facts, weighs options, defines directions and sets goals within a time frame. National leadership has greater demands as there is no room for "trial and error" because the cost is so great. You cannot shift accountability to God for 10 billion dollars a month for the war in Iraq, nor justify that reasoning for the loss of lives that can never be quantified. Those decisions were made by man, not God, so leave Him out of it.

It is very dangerous for world leaders to use this convenience for their foreign policies, it will put us all under the sword. Imagine if they all say that in the UN!

When we refuse to accept responsibility, we say "it is God's will." It's just like saying, He allowed it, so it is HIS fault. What a convenient way out.

With "Thou shalt not kill" God made quite clear His feelings. Where's the doubt?

Cynthia, disappointingly, some people feel the need to blame others for their short-comings.....whoever they may be. You have expressed your feelings well, in this heartfelt piece.

Your friend, Stuart
