Survival tips for anyone facing a winter storm.

In all situations where there is a loss of power, heat, water or food, you need to have a plan.

This is in retrospect after the recent ice storm which has struck many people in the area in which I live.

Make sure that your car is filled with gas if there is a weather report of ice approaching. Many people in the surrounding areas came to four gasoline stations that still had power because there was no power in their town.

Make sure you have plenty of bottled water, food that can be cooked over an open flame, such as hot dogs and buns.

Be sure to have plenty of candles, or kerosene lamps for light. Flashlights (large ones) are great as well.

If you can afford to purchase a generator, that is the best way to stay in your own home. If you can't do that, there are propane heaters that you can use for a short period of time while awake. Kerosene heaters can be utilized, but with caution.

Get together with friends or family to help each other and share supplies. You can play board games, cards, etc. Wear several layers of clothes.

If you are unable to do any of these things, seek out the nearest church for assistance. They would know where you can get some help, if they were unable or not in a position to assist.

Never stay by yourself in a cold house without letting someone know you are there. There have been several deaths due to people who were too proud to ask for assistance.
