What The Diabetic Is Thinking During a Hypoglycemic Reaction

This is a short synopsis of the thoughts of a diabetic during a hypoglycemic reaction.

It was a regular day at work in the clinic. I rarely had time to go to the bathroom, much less checking my blood sugar. There are no more warning signs and I try to check it at least every 2-3 hours. This day's activities just seemed to get in the way and I didn't take the time.

I was trying to fax over a referral to an insurance company. As I was waiting in line at the fax, there seemed to be a lot of noise and bustling about. "I just need some quiet time," I thought.

As I went back to the nurses' station, I put the referral down, went into the bathroom, locked the door and stood in the dark with my back against the door.

"It's hot," I think to myself. But it is much calmer in here. I hear someone say,"Where's Karen?" As I hear them talking, I brace myself against the door.

Then the janitor tries to open the bathroom door with his key. I push the door with all of my strength. "I wish they would just leave me alone, so I could get some peace and quiet," I thought.

All of the sudden, the door begins to open and one of the doctors, sticks her head into the bathroom. "Karen," she says, "if you don't come out, you will have to go home." I didn't want to go home, so I opened the door.

The next thing I knew, I was in the breakroom drinking a regular coke.  After about 15 minutes of drinking, I began to come back into reality. "I'm so sorry," as I asked for forgiveness to the doctor. "There's nothing to forgive, Karen," she said.

It's humiliating to go through those times, but I have learned to teach other families to help their diabetic family members, in a comforting way.  There really is a reason for everything!  KJ Jacobs
