I sing for my flag

We are strange people. We are Somalis. We are the only community in the world who wake up every morning without having a flag under which they are united. The Somali flag is seen in the presidential palaces of TFG in Mogadishu and maybe in other few locations, but not in schools and other institutions or public places as it used to be in good old days.

Have we forgotten the Colonial/Trusteeship years of early fifties when a young man by the name of Awale Liban came up with the brilliant idea of designing flag for somalia before somalia was even born as an independent sovereign nation? Mr Liban belonged to a legislative council whose members were selected from among parties existed those days. Have we forgotten when, in the same year of 1954, the talented poet and composer Hussein Aw-farah Dubbad along with the great musician Abdullahi Qarshe created a song for the flag (Qolabaa Calankeed later adopted as a national anthem)? Have we forgotten the day Mohamed Abdulle Halane wrapped the flag on his waist and died bleeding from injuries he sustained from Ethiopians during the 1964 war?. Have we forgotten the celebrations held every year in Somalia to commemorate the first time a somali flag hoisted on a somali soil?

If we have not forgotten all these facts and many more, why then we treat our flag like a trash littered around in a rubbish-ridden street?. Why do we treat it like a disqualified money-note which is no longer valid for market circulation?

Warlords have destroyed Somalia and defecated on its flag. They never respected it, never sang for it. Insurgents buried it and replaced with another one that bore the Arabic script of Ashahaada. To change the flag of a nation without any constitutional back up is a crime against the state or could be attributed to an act of treason. A nation tattered into pieces of lands (with the last piece being Banadirland) must be wallowing in the depths of its own destruction. I hope beneath the rubble of this mess there are embers of hope awaiting to be rekindled with a storm of nationalism.

Sometimes the death of freedom first victim is the nation's identity, to restore it will be needed to cut off above the gangrene where the innocents are.
