Tips on going to a farmer's market.

Living in Dane County Wisconsin is living in farmer’s market heaven. Of course there is the market on the square most Saturday’s starting in mid-April through early November. Madison also has a winter market located at Monona Terrace on Saturday’s. Many area communities also host farmer’s markets including: DeForest, Fitchburg, Hilldale Shopping Center, McFarland, Middleton, Monona, Oregon, South Madison, Stoughton, Sun Prairie and Waunakee. For a complete listing of dates and locations of farmer’s markets go to www.reapfoodgroup.org.

Most markets start by seven in the morning and end early in the afternoon. Even in late September it’s possible to visit your local farmer’s market and pick food for a healthy lunch. For example at markets this past Saturday (Sept. 25th) you could select: tomatoes, onions, cauliflower, broccoli, squash, bell peppers, potatoes, pumpkins, eggs, fresh apple cider, kale, beets, carrots, green onions, cheese, bread, jams and jellies and many other products.

A suggested lunch would be a homemade fresh vegetable frittata. Start by slicing onions, green peppers, broccoli florets and grating sharp cheddar cheese. Boil several small red potatoes then slice (some like to peel the potato).

Put butter with the onion slices in an 8 inch pie plate or quiche plate in a 450 degree (F) oven for about 5 minutes. Next add the green peppers, potato and broccoli then sprinkle with cheese.

Mix together three whole eggs with three egg whites that have been slightly beaten. Salt and pepper to taste. Pour the egg mixture over the vegetables over in the pan. Bake for 10-15 minutes until the eggs are set in the middle (test with a toothpick).

Allow to cool a few minutes, slice and serve with a big slice of bread and a large glass of fresh apple cider.
