Odd Stagings #6: THE FLIGHT OF THE BUMBLEBEE HIGH-SPEED BALLET

"Flight of the Bumblebee" was written by Rimsky-Korsakov for his opera “The Tale of Tsar Saltan”. It is one of the most familiar and favorite concert pieces in the world, beloved of connoisseurs and neophytes and children alike.

But it moves too fast to be part of the old ballet repertoire.

In this “Odd Staging” the music is slowed down to quarter-speed, and the ballet would performed in a black and orange costume by a single dancer. She is lit from above with three spotlights, and, as she dances, a group of hexagonal mirrors come up from behind her, and then more and more mirrors, to create a “House of Mirrors” effect that also mimics a huge honeycomb.

This is all filmed in normal speed, and then the film [or video] is played back at what would be the normal speed for the music.

In the end result, the dancer would be dancing in a manner that is impossible in real time.

And the mirrors would create a kaleidoscopic effect.
