Working At a Better Marriage

Advice on how to make your marriage stronger and how to revive it back to a place that is enjoyable.

Happy marriages are as easy to find as a needle in a haystack. The stresses and hardships on a couple's life can weigh heavy and cause them to take their frustrations out on each other. In some cases, the couple may be dealing with hurt feelings from the past, they may be struggling with trust issues, and they may even have problems in the bedroom. Marriage is give and take and it is important to always stay focused on ways to contribute to the success of your marriage. There are a few things that may help the couple get on the right path or at least begin the process of doing so.
Communication- One of the top reasons couples get divorced is lack of communication. Sometimes the breakdown of communication comes from resentment about an issue that has not been resolved. If a person does not feel heard or understood in a relationship they will start to withdrawl, and the first sign recognized is silence or light talk. Talking about things on the surface, but not discussing hurtful issues from the past. Some call this "faking it" which means pretending to not be resentful with small talk. Some couples shut down completely and stop talking all together and become silent roommates. Try to put your emotions aside and discuss the issues with one another with respect, understanding, and making sure to listen to your partner. If that doesn't work, it may be necessary to get a therapist involved to help open the lines of communication.
