This premier issue of VOICES IN THE LIBRARY published by Radomir Luza, Jr. is dedicated to Luza's mother, who died in August of 2001 after a battle with cancer.As so often is the case, artists use personal tragedies as a launching pad for creative efforts. This edition of VOICES... has a nice selection of poetry, with a strong emphasis on the Sept 11 event. RETRIBUTION, by Christine Strevinsky, has an unpopular take on that infamous day: "For the sorrows of/Trail of Tears/smallpox blankets/enforced Christianty.../cotton fields/back of the bus/ Twin Tower fall/ like predator has become prey." In this edition there is also work by A. D. Winans, Lyn Lifshin, Joyce Metzger, Frances Lemoine and other Ibbetson Updaters. My only complaint is that the production values and some of the art is rather pedestrian. Still- it's worth your while to pick up this spanking new journal.
