There's several different classes of writers out there. Plenty of people will label themselves as writers, but they've never written anything. Plenty of people, more than you'd expect, are "writing" a book. Only they haven't got around to writing anything.
There's another class of writers who write, and write well, but they never publish anything. Who knows, maybe their afraid of rejection, or maybe their afraid of success. They've got tons of characters created, have done plenty of work on plot development, and even have entire manuscripts completed, but would rather get to work on their next project rather than put it out there for everybody to see.
Then there's folks who write for a living. Maybe full time, or maybe part time. May they earn a couple extra hundred dollars a month, maybe their easily earn six figures a year by working only a couple hours a week. Wherever they lie on the spectrum, when they write, they get paid.
And just like any other trade, there's two ways to earn more money. Increase your skills, and increase your exposure. You can be the best writer in the world, but if nobody knows who you are, you won't ever make a dime.
On the other hand, you could be known around the world, but if most folks don't think too highly of your material, you won't make much either.
But the real secret to writing for a living is that you only need to be reasonably good at both of those. You don't need to be world famous, and you don't need to be as skilled as Robert Frost. You've just got to write reasonably well, and be known by a reasonable amount of people.
Perhaps that's why there's so few writers, and good writers are in such demand these days. Many people have plenty good enough skills, but are terrified of putting their work out there.
Chances are, you, right there, sitting there reading this, have enough writing skills to be making tons of money. All you really need is exposure.
How do you get that exposure? Hustle! Build up a decent portfolio. Get as many people to check out your portfolio as possible! Figure out a system that works for you, and just keep on doing it!
There's plenty of ways to get people to check out your stuff. Forum posts, Craigslist ads, banner ads, even Google ads. There's also free places like this here article directory, and other options like YouTube.
Truth be told, it's really not that difficult to proclaim your writing skills to the world, and reap the rewards. All you've got to do is take action.
