150 Year Anniversary of the Bancroft Ranch House was celebrated with the youth of Monte Vista High School In Spring Valley, CA

By Linda Meckler

The Spring Valley Historical Society celebrated the 150th anniversary of the adobe house by funding a photography contest which consisted of high school youths on October 5th. Kathy Heath the 1st Vice President and Karen Breedlove photography and photo shop software, teacher at Monte Vista High School brainstormed to make this a special occasion. Several youths presented photos of the Bancroft Adobe House. Money and certificates were awarded to the winners. There was a barbecue and the food, friendship and the park setting made it a very special evening. The downside of this talented youth contest was the photography class will be cut because of budget cuts starting the next school year.

The winners from right to left Joseph Ross, 3rd place winner, Leahnne Godoy, 2nd place, Faith Foster, Honorable Mention, Kyle. First place winner Falon Bruce was out of town. All the photos were beautifully created and made history in the already historical environment. The old and the new technology are now intertwined and this adobe home will live on for many more years.

The Adobe Ranch House became a California Historical Landmark in 1958 and then became a National Historic Landmark in 1962. The structure was built by Angustus Ensworth in 1856 out of timbers salvaged from a shipwreck in San Diego Bay. When Ensworth’s died it was sold in 1865 to Rufus King Porter, son of the founder of Scientific American. He remodeled the ranch house. The next owner was Hubert Howe Bancroft in 1885. Bancroft later built a rock school and another home which is now a museum. The property contains a natural spring named El aguaje de San Jorge or St. George’s Spring by the Spanish. This is where Spring Valley received its name.

Rob Case the President of 11 years said, “This is a significant milestone in East County.
Kathy Heath 1st Vice President said, I have been a member of the Spring Valley Historical Society for five years. I was born in Spring Valley, and worked in the Spring Valley Elementary School for twenty-five years.
Joey Ross said, “Next year they are closing the photography class program I have been in for the last two years. It’s a huge mistake. “
Kyle Pfister said, “I learned composition and so much that I can use this in college and also in my everyday life.”
The Bancroft Adobe House will live on and it will continue to be the home of the Spring Valley Historical Society.
