What drives the controversial decision to terminate the life of an innocent being? Whether that decision is equitable, reasonable or fair is often predicated on the philosophical debate about the good – or needs – of the many outweighing the good – or needs – of a single individual, be that individual the woman or her child.
We must again return to the question of why that decision to terminate the birth was made to begin with. Was it the stigma of social shame? Was it the reluctance to bring another child into an already crowded house…or world? Was there pressure by parents to “get rid of this mistake so you can finish high school”? Are there addictions, diseases or a history of genetic problems that are likely to be passed to the unborn child? Is it simply “not convenient” to put one’s life on hold and delay the pursuit of personal dreams?
