Americans handled the huge deficit after World War II but the moral deficit created by Slavery, white supremacy and segregation remains with Americans, even until today.

In America we are constantly reminded of the financial or economic deficit. But the financial deficit is not the worst deficit that "we can leave for our children," to use the phrase espoused by so-called conservative members of Congress who advocate reverse Robin Hood, taking from  those with less to increase the wealth of the wealthy.
The moral deficit is the worst deficit that we can pass on to our children. An example of a moral deficit is the treatrment of {so-called} racial minoriteis, propelled by white supremacy, slavery and segregation and perpetually fostering racism and conflict between blacks and whites.
Americans younger than age 30, in particular, are challenged to break the generational curse of racism by rejecting immoral practices of their antecedents.
Peggy Kennedy Wallace demonstrates how this can be done. She is the daughter of arch-segregationist George Wallace, former governor of Alabama, who stood in the doors of the University of Alabama to prevent integeration of the campus.
On "Bloody Sunday," March 7 1965, he was governor when civil rights marchers attempted to march across the Edmund Petttus Bridge in Selma.
On March 8, during the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of "Bloody Sunday," the day after President Barack Obama delivered a soaring speech atop the Edmund Pettus Bridge, Peggy Kennedy Wallace stood on the steps of the Alabama Capitol and, with and unapologetically resounding voice, renounced acts of hate committed by her father:
She said, "It was here that I heard my father say the words, 'segregation now, segregation tomorrow and segregation forever.' It was here that my father fought to support a culture of exclusion, riding the wings of fear rather than just seeking justice on the wings of eagles."
When she finished speaking, John Lewis, who 50 years earlier had been nearly beaten to death by state troopers on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, embraced her as "my friend" and called her "my sister."
The fiscal deficit after World War II was a greater percentage of the gross domestic product than it is now. Future generations will handle a financial deficit, but history reveals it's more difficult to handle a moral deficit. No cuts in entitlements for the poor are necessary.
