Wouldn’t it be surprising and wonderful if an independent candidate for president offered a set of promises that included all of the following?
A real jobs proposal
A living wage proposal
A way out of poverty
Free education (academic and skills) for all
A single payer universal health care system
A reduction in illiteracy rates
A reduction in illegal drug usage
A reduction in crime
A reduction in teen pregnancies
A reduction in suicides
A reduction in mental health issues
A reduction in obesity rates
A reduction in imprisonment rates
Greater life expectancies
Greater social mobility
Equitable tax rates
Equitable inheritance laws
An infrastructure building program
Increased R&D in renewable energy sources
Reduced budget deficits
Less reliance on government by everyone
A new charter and a shake up at the Federal Reserve to help implement all the above
If you are so jaded and steeped in politics as usual, then you will say that this is all pie in the sky. And, of course, you would be correct. Given those assumptions, it is all wishful thinking. But given a real understanding of how the economy actually works, and its potential for changing the lives of us all for the better, it is not only possible, it is a realistic list of achievable outcomes that could happen in about 8 years.
In the next few months, I am going to begin to identify candidates who have the ability and the know how to make this list a reality. Unfortunately, the leading candidate, Lester Thurow, died last month. There are others. Stay tuned.
All of your valid points boil down to one premise - taking into consideration the welfare of all Americans. When that happens, everything would theoretically fall into place.
All the promises shown are worthwhile and should be pursued by all of us in as many ways as we can.
As far as candidates go, I'm sure there are many. I would venture Elizabeth Warren, Wendy Davis, Tammy Baldwin or Tammy Duckworth. Why are they all women? I don't know? Just my preference at this point in time.
