CIVIL RIGHTS MEMORIAL - CIVIL RIGHTS MARTYRS.

The Cvil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama is sponsored by the Southern Poverty  Law Center. Presented in this media with commentary by Uriah J. Fields

As presenter of the Civil Rights Martyrs' list, let be begin by expressing my heartfelt thanks to the Southern povery Law Center for being a keeper of history that pertains to civil rights and maintaining an unrelenting commitment to exposing the enemies of equality and justice for all, especially perpertrators of racism, i.e., racial hate groups.

I lived in Monggomery for a decade that included the period of the Montgomery Bus Boycott which I helped to lead and was the original secretary (and as such Martin Luther King Jr.,' first Civil Rights' secretary) of the Montgomery Improvement Association that was organized four days after Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give her bus seat to a white person to direct the bus boycott, and pastor of  Bell Sreet Bapitst Church that was one of four churches and two parsonages bombed in the wee hours of the morning. Taylor Branch, in his book, "Parting the Waters" stated, "Bell Street Baptist Church suffered the  most destrution on the night of the bombs." (p. 200). Bell Street Baptist Church was rebuilt under my pastoral leadership and I continued to pastor the church for another five years.

On the Civil Rights Memorial are inscribed the names of 41 individuals who lost their lives in the struggle for frerdom during the modern Civil Rghts movemnt - 1955 to 1968 - that began the with the arrest of Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott. (continued)
