Trust over Loyalty
Are You Trustworthy?
To All Candidates for Public Office:
I value trust over allegiances, honor over servitude, and justice over affiliations. Do not ask me to contribute to, make pledges, pacts, or other artifacts that reflect narrow-minded thinking or that further the aims of greed, or the permanency of the status quo. I always reserve the right to change my mind when circumstances change, or when a hidden agenda emerges that I find dishonest, disgraceful, or degrading. If you expect my loyalty to your cause, you must first win my respect as a trust-worthy person whose integrity cannot be bought; who values honor, freedom, and justice over political affiliations; and who will never let others define who you are or the principles that guide you. Do these things, and I will likely vote for you. Ignore them and I will help you find a more suitable place for your objectives.

I was shocked one time when the guy who I considered equal (we both got our doctorates at the same place) even though he was younger, tried to explain to me, as my boss, that he valued loyalty over anything else. When he got false information that I was being disloyal, he distanced himself from me. But lost his position and power when his political enemies found out that he was misusing funds to benefit himself and his family. To me, trust has to come from honesty, not dishonesty protected by loyalty.
