He went down like a brick.

24 JUL 2018
Professor Ambrose Penwose, Kiwi

Good Evening,

I can never impress upon you enough the need to stay alert when driving.
I will never forget the time I was motoring in the mountains when an elk jumped out of the woods onto the road right in front of me! Scared the dickens out of me! He was a big one. My heart went into my throat.
I hit the breaks and went into a skid and hit the elk. He went down like a brick. I was afraid to look at him. I’ve heard they can be dangerous when wounded. I knew I had to check his condition so I took a peek. He was either dead or asleep.
He appeared to have been with a group of elks in a nearby meadow. Apparently they heard the commotion and moseyed over. I was shaken over the ordeal, and their presence caused me some anxiety and fear. I was not sure how they would react.
The one I hit’s leg started to twitch. I thought for sure I had killed him, so I was relieved to see I didn’t. The others went quickly to his side as if they sensed something. They made strange noises that I never heard before.
I’m not a medical person, but I went over to offer assistance. He got up on his feet and seemed to be all right. I breathed a sigh of relief. The others looked him over and sauntered back to the meadow after they were satisfied he was ok.
The one I hit went to rejoin his friends. I felt there was something I should do so I followed him for a few steps.
He asked if I wanted a beer. I said, “Sure!”

Penwose Out,
Bye George

You got me in the end with that last line! We have a lot of those at the Elks Club. If you're a member, or a friend of a member, you can stop over for a beer anytime.

Bye, George,

Ron
