Where is the person, the private person
who can think for himself? What part does technology have is this state of existence?
"If your soul is a stranger to you, the whole
world is unhomely."
To have a private life in today's world, a world seized by
technology, social media, cameras, cellular phones and secret
horizontal and vertical survellance spacecrafts that detect
the individual even when he is asleep at home means fighting
the hardest battle anyone can ever fight and never stop
fighting. Not to have a private life is to become a robot
The individual in the crowd is other-directed as to what food
to eat, clothes to wear, medicine and supplements to
consume, and what to think, do, and have. Where is the
person, the private person, who can think for himself? He
is swallowed in togetherness which may falsely be called
community.
We have made an idol of togetherness. It is the
quintessence way of being and increasingly the
substitute for God, even for god above God. We
listen seemingly helplessly to the voice that says,
"Give me your huddle masses." We surreder, desolate,
lonely in the crowd and fear-ridden. Our bodies touch
even when we try to avoid touching, and often we say
to someone we touch, "Excuse me," indicating that our
touching was unintentional or unavoidable. Our hearts
cry out desperately for understanding that will help us
find meanning in the meaninglessness that engulfs us.
Survival wthout meaning is tantamont to life not worth
living.
There must be found creative ways that can ventilate the
private soul and restore integrity of the person in the midst
of the collective necessities of our time and enable him to
practice real community where the private life and
uniqueness of the person is respected and safeguarded.
The good news is within the reach of every person is a
defense against the Grand Invasion. He can discover and
choose himself, as a way to enhance the private meaning
and his personal worth. He can grow in the spirit of solitude
and live in the spirit. He can through prayer, contemplation
and silence possess and be possessed by God-consciousness.
It is then the wanderer comes to himself and comes home,
and his private life is saved for responsible and deliberate
involvement in purposeful living. Indeed, there is no place
like home.

But I always have been a loner and unwilling to join groups for the sake of joining or benefiting from them. I recently learned that I am a libertarian--in a good way--I tend to support progressive thinking over regressive, archaic thinking. Anyway, I am now solicited by the Democrats as being a loyal member. As a Democrat, I must pledge my allegiance and support every single initiative that Democrats collectively are engaged in.
I refuse to support initiatives that I personally can't support scientifically or logically. But the Internet produced surveys do not allow me to speak my mind. They continually force me to "approve" Democratic initiatives. And I can't get rid of them by denying them or not spending money on them. It's a real chore not to be pigeonholed and remain an individual like your article suggests.
