History Repeats

In 1923 Adolf Hitler attempted a coup of the Bavarian government in what history recorded as the “Bier Hall Putsch.” He and his Nazi followers hatched a plot in which they would kidnap the leaders of the Bavarian government and force them at gunpoint to accept Hitler as their leader. Then, with the aid of World War I General, Erich Ludendorff, they would win over the German Army, proclaim a nationwide revolt and bring down the German democratic government in Berlin. The coup failed, Hitler was tried for treason, and he spent the next 9 months in a prison cell where he wrote his book titled “Mein Kampf,” or My Struggles. It was virtually a play book of how he intended to capture Germany and then the world under the glorious umbrella of “Germania,” a super power led by super men.

Hitler was an ignoramus, but he spoke the street language of the common man. He told them what they wanted to hear; namely, that they had been cheated by the Versailles Treaty following WWI, when they were ordered to pay $33 billion dollars in war reparations. Hyperinflation set in, the Deutsche Mark became worthless, and Germany sank into a desperate state. People were hungry, there were no jobs, and there was no one to turn to. Except to their blithering Nazi leader who now sounded to them like a Messiah. His technique: Tell hundreds and hundreds of lies until his captive audience believed him. He led them to the worst defeat in human history.

On January 6, 2021, Donald Trump attempted a coup of the United States government in what history will record as the Trump Capitol Putsch. Anticipating his defeat in the November elections, he began a campaign of lies with his 75 million Twitter followers, while using the street language of the common man. “The upcoming elections are already rigged,” he told them. With his defeat in November he railed and railed that the election had been rigged. He and his inner circle laid out a plan to take the U.S. capitol by storm, stop the vote count, capture the Vice President and the Speaker of the House, and declare himself winner by default. It was a scene reminiscent of the Bier Hall Putsch.

Donald Trump was also an ignoramus. He spoke the street language of the common man. He told his followers what they wanted to hear; namely, that he had been cheated out of the election. He asked them for money to take his case to the Supreme Court that he had packed with a majority of his kind. They responded by sending him $495 million dollars. He invited them to Washington where he whipped them into a frenzy by reading from his teleprompter. He urged them to go to the capitol and to ”be strong. I will go with you.” He didn’t. Meanwhile millions of Americans were at home, hunkered down, unemployed, while many were dying by the tens of thousands from a virus pandemic for which he took no responsibility.

Trump led his followers (from the rear) to an inglorious defeat, while he was humiliated with a swift impeachment by the House for inciting an insurrection against the U.S. government. His trial awaits him. Will there be enough votes by his followers in the U.S. Senate who found out first hand how much he really loved them? Or will he lift off from Andrews Air Force Base in Air Force One for the last time, at 11:30 A.M., January 20, 2021, with his $495 million bounty, smiling as he milks one last travel perk from the office that he so brazenly disgraced?

As has already proven itself, you are a repository of rich history and erudite control of its many variations, e.g., facts and fiction. If only the extremists would read your work and pause... just for a moment and consider where their heads are. Keep it coming, Ed. Your writing continues to highlight my mornings.
