Better than a bagel

Porridge

Today was my final day with a Bagel Breakfast, which I sometimes eat to deviate from the boredom of porridge.

Also known as gruel, mush, and other things, porridge is basically oatmeal.

I had no idea, nor did I realize, those poor little orphan waifs of literature had such a heart healthy diet, and yet all the while they complained of no bacon.

Perhaps that is why they were such good thieves and pickpockets.

Historians of the time tell us the little devilish lads used to take handfuls of the stuff, add a little dirt and odor, and fling it at folks who believed they were being thrown at with shit.

The power of porridge can be expressed no better than realizing an entire novel of considerable size was written of a child who set himself apart from all the others simply by asking for more.

Truth is, if such an occurrence never happened, Charles Dickens would probably never have heard of it, said novel would never had been written, leaving book binders with nothing to bind, readers with nothing to read, and those on the throne with no paper.

Therefore we all are thankful it did.

Penwose Out,
