Cool Hand Luke

Critics wonder how George Kennedy could win an Oscar while Paul Newman did not?

Insiders say Newman would have, if he’d have “eaten the eggs.”

in one of the most amazing scenes in Hollywood history,
Paul, aka Luke, said he could eat 50 eggs in one hour.

Joanne Woodward said there was, “No Way in Hell,” Paul was coming home stuffed with eggs.
Newman said he could probably eat 4.
Producers said the scene was seen as necessary, so something had to be done?

As luck would have it, a stagehand came forth saying he could eat 3 dozen eggs. Furthermore, when his mouth was full, and his cheeks blowed-out, he looked exactly like Paul Newman…and he had a fat belly.

Newman said he wished they’d have found him before George Kennedy beat the crap out of him.

The scene was shot. The new stunt double ate 36 eggs, along with Newman’s 4, making 40. They made it look like 50.
It was done in 3 hours, and they made it look like one.

Luke, and his boys, won the stupid bet, and the rest was Hollywood History.

The stagehand did so well he became Newman’s Personal Stuntman, until they told him he had to jump off a cliff in, Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid.
Robert Redford’s stuntman quit as well, but he came back.
Paul’s is probably still running.

They will never make another version because of that egg-eating scene.
Producers have tried, but they cannot find anyone who can eat that many eggs.

And that’s the way it is!

Hinkly Out,
