I recall a summer's day
long ago and far away.
the perfect place to start a dream.
Vague memories of fun I had
mushroom hunting with my dad.
My younger brothers were there too.
Mushrooms, we caught very few.
We were content just to explore
the treasures nature held in store.
We climbed the hills and crossed the creek.
We spotted deer playing hide and seek.
The air just had that certain smell
that told you everything was well.
The sun was high, the sky was clear,
nothing in the world to fear.
I never stopped to read the news
of politicians and their views,
The horrors and the goings on,
the Middle East and Viet Nam.
I carelessly whiled my time away.
Tomorrow would be another day.
I watched the flowers growing wild.
I was such a naive child.
Then autumn caused my leaves to change.
I left for places new and strange.
For many years I had to roam
like Ulysses, longing for home.
I grew older, more mature.
I saw the world was not so pure.
I opened my eyes and learned to see
the ugliness, even in me.
The world where once I was so bold
was now like winter, bitter cold.
My tragic flaws led to heartaches.
If I'd only learn from my mistakes.
One lesson came too late to learn.
Once childhood's fled, it can't return.
So children, be like Peter Pan.
Grow old as slowly as you can.
I pray that when my son is older
and this old world is even colder
he'll find a place where the air is warm
and he can feel he's safe from harm.
The sun will shine and birds will sing
of all the promises of spring.
And summer will return again.
The world will be much happier then.

Still Living on my Feet is the follow up to Tichaona Chinyelu’s first book, In the Whirlwind, which was rooted in a sense of hard-hitting revolutionary black love. However, in this sophomore effort, Tichaona brings the revolutionary essence from deep
