Communion between animal spirit and land.

Poem Artwork

The Legend of Sam Storey

Those here
have a
strong
frontier
spirit
they keep
close
communion
between

spirit
and
land.

Horses don't
usually
run
rapids
Class IV.

Pioneers
called it
Devil's Jump.

A load of
canoers
dumped
in a
downpour.

Sam Storey
jumped
to their
rescue
from high
above

from the
O & W
Bridge,

built for
lumber-and-coal
hauling
railroads
long
abandoned.

"No damn
horse can
get up
there!"

"Yes sir,
Sam Storey
did."

The old
moonshiner
knows,

with a
need
of
seclusion
and
haste,

He saw
it all.

The only
trace,

a tool,
a pipe
from
a
moonshiner's
still.

So, is
the

Legend
of
Sam
Storey.

I think maybe the old moonshiner did taste a bit too much of his product...;) Ed

You would be fun by the campfire, telling stories :-)

Sage, this drew me back to my childhood, watching movies on Saturdays and Sundays in which the heroes were the horses. It makes me realize that now the only way our children hear such tales is if we turn to a special channel on the TV. If a family doesn't have cable, they won't see animal stories much at all. Such tales are now segregated. I wonder if this has contributed to the lack of respect for nature and animals. ~~Nordette
