Tomorrow
they will light candles for you
and stick them in a cake
and sing you
the only Happy Birthdays
you really want to hear.

In some way
the perfect picture makes me
see things differently and
smile for you
as all the years of tears
flow into only golden joy.

I might have
liked such a scene for me,
but my call is to stand
on far rim
and echo love's cry
over fortune's fields and

beyond white
cliffs of certainty
calling out to those caught
into the void
of not even knowing
that such joy can be.

If life had
allowed, I would have baked
a thousand cakes and sung
only happy songs
and all of them for you.
But perhaps not.

Is it I
who first made the choice
to honor my life and voice,
to persevere through
deepest cut, valleys dark,
nurture incandescent spark.

See my gifts?
I see the possibility,
I feel love never to be mine
I know you
would never, will never leave me,
even though I watched you go.

you have the poetic skill of reaching into the reader's emotion as you stimulate the perceptions within your experience ...

great write ...

A deeply personal and painful write, Dawn. Life need not pass you by because someone was not wise enough to value your love. You are more beautiful for having had the heart to love someone who was incapable of loving you in return. Step back and watch them march to the drumbeat that they have chosen and weep only for the emptiness within their soul for not knowing the joy of giving and accepting love. Freedom is a double edged sword, on one side it can leave us walking alone but on the other side, it leaves us open to find a true love and welcome it into our world that was already compete without it. Beautiful poetry!
Take care,
Sherry

Ah, the treasure is within your heart, Gwen. Tarnished in the air of day, there it glistens and always will-adding to the beauty of your soul. So brilliantly captured and expressed!

It is always efficacious for those around when one knows their call and where to stand.

So much couched in the straightforwardness of your diction here, Dawn. Yet complex ideas of the exchange of intimacy and distance and the interchange between inner and outer worlds form the skeletal framework supporting this well-executed piece. Very poignant penultimate stanza and I like your use of end rhymes here which sets it slightly apart from the rest and introduces the turn. As are all your writes, this is powerful and doesn't shy away from the deep emotional and psychological issues. TY and bless you, Kate xx
