(On Your 54th Birthday)

Now -
on this long day... again,
words are brittle, insufficient,
but as necessary as my next breath.

I do not know how to tell you
or what to say. I know you will not
hear me. Still, truth hangs as a beautiful,
burning sun. Stung by love, I do not know
why I would survive a million winters only
to spend a day in your summer life. I know
only that I would, I will, I do. I do.

This love ablaze, though twice removed,
scorches my thirsty field and cracks me open
until another miraculous river born of the waiting
carries me back to your heart, very heart
of my broken heart. Absent, you
are ever moving through me
as a summer storm.

Fire of remembrance consumes me.
Sweet flood of forgetfulness can no more
remove me from bright light of your presence,
a comfort always, than the Earth can hide
or remain shrouded, oblivious
to her dazzling Sun,
dancing day-source.

Our days apart lengthen to pinnacle
of shadowed separation. Yet, time is short.
Unable to approach, I can offer no gift. I light
a candle, imagine pools of love reflected
in your hazel eyes, dive into your soul,
showering you with all I am
trying so hard to say.

Your verses are as though they were written for me. They fit to a completeness beyond what I would ever expect. Thank you. Love and best wishes,
