A tribute to George Linneaus Banks

Poem Artwork

What I Live for

I live to choose what’s right for me
To maximize my will
To find the things that I can do
Beyond a moment’s thrill:
To touch a heart
To bend a mind
Away from evil’s reach
To educate and cultivate
And soothe but never preach.

This world is full of challenges
Along every lonely ridge
When outward troubles dim my eye
I try to build a bridge
Above the flames of dark and night
So all the world can see
There’s so much more
From shore to shore
On which we can agree.

Still I am impatient
And cannot wait
For time to tear down wrongs
The hungry and the weak require
I break away from throngs—
And boldly take that daring step
That others say is wrong
And find my footing
What e‘er the cost
That’s right where I belong.

The devil has his due they say
There’s good in every one
Judge not my sins
Forget my wins
Until the race is won.
And when that day at last is here
I will not look for praise
May we both arrive
At the mountain’s top
Although in different ways.

I love this phrase. We are different but yet the same. We finish at the same place but arrive in different ways.

Humanity can be at it's best =- but we each find love through different ways, and when we arrive at the mountain's top, then we've seen and done it all.......

That's what I call having a mind of your own Edward. Only people with such a mind make a remarkable difference in this world. To the mountain top you shall soar! Hopefully see you there!

The race goes not to the swift, but to the persistent.

Keep climbing!

...beyond the boundaries...seemingly still within the world's
reality!...only few daring and insolent truly climb to kiss the
peak of mountain...so great...yet...sooo subtle....holding
feet on a ground....enjoying a time on earth...before saying
adieu to all its traps...fears...misgivings...and if possible when
one doesn't afraid of........heights...humility.........own death!
Oh! Dear Life!....in absence of choice...culminating...at last!
Thank you, Edward for sharing your poem........ of the vast
tomorrows...with many...many mountains you haven't yet
climbed!

An excellent write to the heights of inspiration. Why is the climb such a challenge at times? Enjoyed!

Very nice. It recognizes that we can have different paths to the same truth and goal of human accomplishment and enlightenment.

Love that photo. Love the poetry. This seems a big step up in your poetry and I am loving it. It has hope and majesty and that is good stuff.
