has been duped,
the True wood from
Anasazi ladder came from
forest fifty miles away, Shawpita
carves authentic ladder Native tattoo
on her arm with sharpened Wildhorse
Canyon obsidian, colors with soot and
red ochre, Shawpita's strong, she's climbing
to the top,
spirit Mesa Verde
ancestors hear the snake,
smoke signal drifts timeless
across the skybody of Anasazi
laws, blackness settles over the cliff
dwellings, patina cliff sun-baked varnish
bleeds under the ancient hewed-out petroglyphs,
Shawpita sends up three more, false moccasins
dragging a leg festered by wire snare,
Shawpita stands on
the top rung of the cliffdweller
ladder at Four Corners, pointing Ms.
Saltwater's piece of obsidian toward the
Anasazi sky ancestors, eagle carries Shawpita
to Wildhorse Canyon to the quarry in Utah, Shawpita
sends up two puffs of smoke, everything is okay,
flint-knapping True obsidian spearheads...
