I was born in 1955. From the cradle I was watching "The Lone Ranger" and "The Adventures of Superman". This led to an early love of comic book superheroes. I recall my cousin and I playing superheroes as young boys and vowing to grow up to become one as many young boys do, but we were completely serious about it. So much so that when I was in the 3rd grade I had my mother make me a Daredevil costume for Halloween. What she did not know was that I secretly began wearing it to school beneath my school clothes. I actually planned to break up school yard fights in costume. Lol. The things kids think! It did lead to my first reality check though. The big moment came and I rushed to find a place to change clothes. I ducked into the boy's rest room and then made 2 major discoveries. First where on earth do you leave your street clothes? Just laying on the restroom floor complete with ID? And secondly by the time you find a place to change clothes and get changed the emergency is long over! So I gave up that idea. By age 12 just reading comics was no longer enough for me. I began to try and write and draw my own. I created a character I called Night-Rider and made his whole costume just the mask, that he could slip on or off in an instant solving that quick change problem I ran into years before. My older brother played an Elvis Presley song called "Night Rider" so I used that as his name. Time passed and I entered High School, but the writing bug had not left me. Having read "The Scarlet Pimpernel" I began to wonder if my Night-Rider character could be turned into a novel. I changed his name to Knight-Rider then so he could use the white knight chess piece as his symbol because symbols are always important with this type of character whether it was the small red flower the scarlet pimpernel or the Z Zorro would leave, he needed a calling card. More time passed. I graduated High School in 1974 and married my high school sweetheart in 1976 but responsibilities of life then took over and I only wrote as a hobby to take my mind off of daily pressures. Illness seemed to strike down everyone I ever loved at that point in time. My wife took ill with a mysterious lung disease that even the doctors could not identify, my mother died of cancer in 1979, so did my best friend Larry. My father died in 1983 so my wife and I decided to move to St. Petersburg, Fl hoping the warmer weather would help her condition. She passed in 1989. Two weeks later my house burned to the ground and I lost everything I owned along with everyone I had ever loved. I ended up living in my van for 3 years. But things got better. I got an apartment in 1991. My cousin in Louisville mailed me a copy of my old Knight-Rider book I had sent him. I had thought it lost in the fire. So I began writing on it again. The name Knight-Rider though had been taken by the TV series of the same name. It seemed like every time I came up with a name for the character someone stole it. I called him "The Mask" for a time but in the 90's the Jim Carry movie of the same name came out. I changed it to "The Black Mask" but then a Batman villain of that name came out. I thought about "The Masque" but there was an X-Man villain by that name. The Black Hood was an old Red Circle comic character in the 60's. I went back to thinking about my original name Knight-Rider because I wanted him to be a hero, a white knight coming to the rescue, not a scary anti-hero as is so popular these days. Then it hit me, "Knight-Hood". It seemed perfect and no one seems to have taken it yet, so Knight-Hood was born. Then in 2010 I met a fellow writer whose screen name was Blackmage and he invited me to join his website for authors and artists called Visual Adjectives, so I did. Once there I posted my Knight-Hood novel just for fun to get some feedback. What I did not know is that they were about to go into the publishing business and offered to publish it for me. So naturally I said of course and it all came to pass. In 2013 the story I had started on when I was 12 years old was now actually a book available first on Kindle and then in paperback on amazon.com. Since then I have mailed them 5 more books and they too will all be coming out soon. The moral of this story is never give up on your dreams and eventually they will find a way to come true. John Reid
