Back in 1969 I was still living in Boston (where I grew up) and I was getting very involved with the anti-war movement. Then one day I found myself 'in the line of fire' in at a demonstration in Harvard Square that went badly when some instigators turned a peaceful demonstration in a nightmare of police bashing people with nightsticks. I was hurt. It took me a number of months to recover. I had this enforced 'down time' to reconsider how else I might effect change in the world, if getting beaten wasn't the best way to get heard. That's when I knew that I could step up with my work as an artist and that would be my forum.
