Her shaking hands inched across the kitchen table top
Certain of their mission but detouring along the way
Her fading vision showed her the ghostly outline
Of the old glass bowl and finally she reached in
She retrieved a single lemon drop and slowly unraveled
The crinkling cellophane wrapper and placed the drop
On the center of her tongue, her favorite spot
The sweet taste tickled her cheeks and then
The sour flavor joined in making her lips pucker
A tiny reminiscent smile crossed her face
Then a tear fell, just one, and then one more
She closed her eyes and leaned back
Against the old lemon tree
Harry was right there beside her
She held his hand and they savored the scent
Of the lemon blossoms floating
On the warm spring air
As a jaybird scolded them for their intrusion
He stroked her hair and gently kissed her forehead
While the bees hummed about seeking nectar
And as the evening drew near and the sun began to set
The sea breeze rustled through the branches
And they watched as nature’s cycle ran its course
As the older lemons began to fall from the tree
To make way for the new
Lemon drops, one by one
Her shaking hands inched across the kitchen table top
She retrieved a single drop and placed it on her tongue
The sour taste lingered as tears fell, one by one
