It used to be I’d climb a mountain
Or walk a forest trail for days
I found there was a certain solace
It’s how I reconciled my ways
But something deep inside was missing
I can’t explain the void that grew
No matter how many treks I started
Their paths would end till I met you
The wilderness became companion
With memories I know will last
Yet I found I still had freedom
To visit relics of my past
And every time I went too far
I stopped and looked and you were there
Like a shepherd tending newborns
You have so much love to share
And now twenty short years later
The local ridges I still climb
The forest trails are a little shorter
I have a better sense of time
And though it’s true despite myself
It is the story of my life
Just as sure as God’s in heaven
I am so grateful you’re my wife
