The Box Turtle Song
(A Ballad by Box Turtle Willie)

Oh there were five box turtles, five desert box turtles,
terrapene ornata luteola.
Yes there were five box turtles, five baby box turtles
way out in Arizona.

Gomez had places to go.
Tatiana asked, "What do you know?"
She insisted that nothing was real.
Gomez said, "I just do what I feel."

Oh there were five box turtles, five desert box turtles,
terrapene ornata luteola.
Yes there were five box turtles, now just four box turtles
living out in Arizona.

Poor Tatiana, she died.
Oh, how the other ones cried.
They tried to make sense of it all.
It was difficult, but Eugenia stood tall.

Now there are four box turtles, four desert box turtles,
terrapene ornata luteola.
Yes there are four box turtles, four artistic box turtles,
and they live out in Arizona.

When death cut their hearts like a knife,
they pondered the meaning of life.
They made beautiful images of God,
though some people thought they were odd.

Oh there are four box turtles, four desert box turtles,
terrapene ornata luteola.
Yes there are four box turtles, four active box turtles
having fun out in Arizona.

They marched in a gay pride parade
waving flags that Eugenia had made.
Marge thought that their marching was bad,
but what fun the little turts had.

Oh there are four box turtles, four desert box turtles,
terrapene ornata luteola.
Yes there are four box turtles, fun loving box turtles,
making plans out in Arizona.

They heard of a motorcycle rally.
They said, "Hey!  That's right up our alley!"
They all thought a trip would be grand
so they got out a map and made plans.

Oh there are four box turtles, four desert box turtles,
terrapene ornata luteola.
Yes there are four box turtles, wild and crazy box turtles,
and they ventured out from Arizona.

Eugenia made a friend and got lucky,
but then they all headed out for Kentucky.
They hitched a ride on a big biker's back.
Marge just about had a heart attack.

Oh there are four box turtles, four desert box turtles,
terrapene ornata luteola.
Yes there are four box turtles, four singing box turtles,
and they're a long way from Arizona.

They sang and played music real loud
which made a big hit with the crowd.
Yes, they really came out of their shells.
The Boone paper said they were swell.

Oh there are four box turtles, four desert box turtles,
terrapene ornata luteola.
Yes there are four box turtles, four roaming box turtles,
but they were longing for Arizona.

They considered a side trip to Boone
to hunt worms by the light of the moon,
But they were eager to return to dad
to tell him of the great fun they'd had.

Oh there are four box turtles, four desert box turtles,
terrapene ornata luteola.
Yes there are four box turtles, four weary box turtles,
on their way back to Arizona.

They walked through the deserts at night
and slept when the sun was too bright.
Seph missed them so much while they were gone,
he wept when they finally came home.

Oh there are four box turtles, four desert box turtles,
terrapene ornata luteola.
Yes there are four box turtles, four happy box turtles,
and they're back home in Arizona.

Yes there are four box turtles, four happy box turtles,
and they're back home in Arizona.

On the Edge of Words by Debra Kraft

Questions, unquestioned discoveries, and answers in parable and rhyme…. This collection records a journey starting with a 1960s retrospective and the first man on the moon, moving to a new millennium welcomed in with a terrorist spin, family crises,
