Poem Artwork

On your mark… get set… the gun goes off,
the race is on.
Eyes are fixed on the finish line;
hearts intent on the gold.
But preparation was a
slow and painful process:
one foot in front of the other,
stretch that muscle, bend that knee.
Free the mind, take the hurdles one by one.
Dare to dream of wild beginnings;
flaming sunsets and purple forests,
think beyond the copper track.
One foot in front of the other,
limbering, stretching, growing,
girls become women, boys become men;
and life ripens as they ready themselves.
The transition from fantasy to reality –
nothing but hard, grueling work;
and there are no quitters on the field,
not them; not those who seek the gold.
They will live and love and learn
through the growing process.
They will rest and pause to see the sunset,
they will breathe the fresh new day;
they will color their lives with boldness
before the finish line, before the gold, before the end.

What a thrilling reminder that the beauty of life comes from the will to engage it as fully as possible, with all the aches, joys, let-downs, and triumphs that come with it. Thank you for the fantastic read. Hope you're having a splendid National Poetry Month,

Hi Carmen:

Wow! Carmen, it is so good to read your poetry again. Olympiad gets my heart to racing, but this particular runner never wants to break the yellow ribbon or follow in the pack to that end spot. Beautiful poem.

I discovered AuthorsDen recently and couldn't believe it when I saw your name. When Bewrite changed its format quite a while ago, I had trouble navigating. Then I received the notice of the merger.

I'll be following you here. Hope you are well.

hugs,
Kathy

ultimately, it is not the victory of crossing the finish line that really matters, it's the ability to race with conviction and determination that wins the true gold of heart ...

excellent poem, Carmen ...

Pain and gain is what it is all about, the double-edged sword which you have brought us so effectively through your compelling words, Carmen. I know little about this kind of talent and commitment, but I do know about focus, which is absolutely necessary in order to both stay and complete the course. You have pointed up both the pleasure and the gruelling grind admirably. But, for me, what you speak of also begs the question, can such determined competitors EVER be satisfied and rest? I wonder... TY for this thoughtful piece. Kate xx

Wow! What an outstanding write my friend! You've captured life within a few lines in this write...for life is a race, we are born, we grown, we crawl, walk, and then run...isn't it funny how this circle of life begins to reverse...for I don't run quite as fast as I once did, physically I mean...spirituallly I am still running for my life! Enjoyed this my friend.
Blessings from Kentucky!

Carmen, you captured it to perfection! I have seen many of the backgrounds of the olympic runners etc and I am in awe of the work they must do to prepare and the pain they endure! Superb poem!

Excellent write....life a race that takes us places...but we will all have to go over that finish line...some wil be happy some will be in pain....but for some there will be no gain...because life is just a game to them!!
