Dedicated to Dad.

Poem Artwork

My father was born in Texas and he always walked the walk The grander things that bought a smile the accent when he talked He was so tall that when he stood the clouds would part the sky Then when he walked his bowlegged steps would cause the earth to sigh His greatness came from giving in a most rewarding style He gave his heart and anything for the big grin of a child His Texas ways made him the man...his kids cherished most The greatest man of all my time was humble...didn't boast Nor brag for he was confident in the greater love for hearts His was given many times to those of needy parts His heart was richer with each gift that came to those in need My dad the Texan, tall and lean was good at giving deeds Scouts and kids and anyone who needed what he had They got it first from this great man...My Texan...yep...my dad The tallest tree that held a cat...he could get it down He could match most any tear in smiles pound for pound He drew a cap gun...played the draw and fell upon the dirt When High Noon came for broomstick riders and their funny quirks He painted faces...made the forts and fancied up the youth For Tonto and the Roys of years he captured all the truth Imagination was his key to making laughter sound Like matchbox cars and boxed in stars...a penny for each pound This Texas man of Hi-Ho fame and lean sharp witted grins This man...my dad with all the kids...my siblings and our friends He is loved for all he did...his genius was divine He wears his halo like a hat and shines...oh yes...he shines That smile of his is in the sun...his words are in each breeze His kiss the whispered silence in the lullaby in trees He sings the creatures all to sleep...he tickles all their toes Then when the loudest storm is passed he paints the great rainbows He is missed but he still lives in all that he did birth This Texan still donates his time to beauty here on earth © 2000 Susan Kathryn de Vegter

One thing that always warms my soul is to read or hear of a loving relationship between father and daughter. It touched me how you defined your beloved Dad in terms of being a Texan. For someone like me who is not familiar with what it means to be a Texan, your tender words have created a vivid portrait of such a man whose esteemed stature could only be measured in terms of magnitude.
Thanks for sharing this lovely homage.

Dai

Susan, this is just a marvelous tribute to your fine father. You wove such beauty into every line to capture images of the memories you hold inside. Your portrait will remain in my mind for a long time because your descriptions were magnificent.

Indeed he does, Susan. Great image to accompany your loving words of admiration as well. The child is father to the man. The father-heart of the man spreads his wings of protection, valour, industry and creativity into the universe around him. You truly walk in his shoes/boots and his light. What a mutual delight you have and continue to share together. Kate xx

Top write. I love Texas, all my ex's live there.lol. I learnt the two step there, and there is something special about the lone star, even in a place like Abilene. My year working at Dyess afb has been one of the highlights of my life. But the men keep hats on indoors, never had seen that before, same as eating without a knife.

I can so see your dad here, and Texas being the friendliest place on earth, I can understand one have such a big hearted dad. love this tribute.. do they still say "don't mess with texas" it was a litter ad...

...I see a big star...above a man...in descriptive giving colors...who painted a family of beauty...and in his memory...he gifted the palette...to them...to the continue the art...in the skies he once held so grand.
...beautiful words for your father...from your heart Susan...

Susan,
I am a transplanted Texan, yet the Lone Star State is home. I agree with Georg, far too many times, we honor our Mothers, while dear old Dad is left out to dry. It is not right and that being said,
no greater a tribute could be written to a man who was obviously loved by so many --- your Dad.

Beautiful work!

Susan,

I concur with Stan, the flow is fine. Nice and easy, kind of listening to a Texan talk - you honor him with beautiful lines - well done. You were indeed blessed - he has mighty big boots to fill. :)
